Some cool things that went down at the Press Club this week

Wednesday, 10 December 2008 14:07 by Lindsay

Sunday night marked the 3rd 'annual' or rather installment of the Matinee series and included guest Shawn Clarke. Not only does Shawn have a great blog, but he's a great artist and fit really well with the mood of Polyester Heart. He played some well selected covers and gave them his own twist as well as played many originals that had a flare all their own. I look forward to seeing him out again. Check out his myspace page for more details on this fab musician.

Tuesday night was the weekly jam night - this one hosted by Mike Hopkins and Marshall Bureau. This one was special because I got to see alot of different types of acts.
From funk, to old school blues, indie rock AND a quick electronic set by Marshall and Dave Marcotte (yes, I know Polyester Heart). Andrew Hickey played a sweet set, his vocals standing out - a polished raspy edge to it. The Blues set featured the 'house band', the resident James on keyboards, and 2 newcomers (for me) on guitar and vocals - great stuff...and I am not the biggest Blues fan.

I am sad to say I was not able to play my glock - though I was ready for action (tucked away beside me at all times). There was a mandolin player, which was pretty cool.

Dates to look out for:

Next Tuesday Jam with Mike and Marshall - Dec 23rd or Jan 6th
Next Sunday Polyester Heart Matinee - Jan 4th (guests TBD)

What the Glock?

Wednesday, 12 November 2008 13:59 by Lindsay

You are now used to seeing somewhat serious posts about live and recorded music here - so I will warn you now, this will be quite the opposite. I thought I’d throw a little bit of random to everyone, because we all need that now and then.

I recently took up the Glockenspiel (“glock“) - due primarily to people’s advice that the violin was just to hard to learn. Here I will share my thoughts, pics and commentary on this intriguing instrument.

Glock Definition

Wikipedia says:
German, "set of bells" or "play-[of-]bells", also known as orchestra bells and, in its portable form, bell lira or bell lyre. Part of the percussion family.

Lindsay says:
Metallic heaven.

Learning the scales on this sucker was certainly much easier then the violin. It’s always in tune! Imagine that. For a beginner to playing music, this sure is a good introduction. To date I have jammed with one of the members of Polyester Heart - Dave Marcotte (much to his dismay), AND played my first tune live along side the talented Ryan Partridge. All of this in just a few months. So this is where I start, where I will end? Who knows…

Matinee series #2 - Nov 2nd Sunday Recap

Monday, 3 November 2008 13:26 by davemarcotte

Well, the second Sunday in our monthly Press Club series was really fun.  Nick Zubeck and his band (Marshall Bureau and Darren Wall) floored every one in attendance. Olenka and the Autumn Lovers were a revelation, and we wish them good luck as they embark on a potentially uncomfortable tour (the travel details were disclosed to me, and it sounds harrowing - Mike H suggested that at least one of the band mates may end up pregnant by the end of the tour, even if by immaculate highway conception). The four of them and their abundance of instruments will travel east in a compact car. Can’t wait to hear about it.

Also found out that Shawn Clarke of the ‘Lovers is a great guy in addition to being a talented musician and blogger. He’s going to play with us in the next instalment of the Sunday Press Club series. I also want to share that he has a very excellent blog that is pretty much like what I wish most other blogs were like. It’s called birdstootiredtofly, and if you love music and the arts in general, check it out.

Polyester Heart: Sunday matinee, 6pm The Press Club

Tuesday, 30 September 2008 13:34 by davemarcotte

Sundays are different for everyone. Some of us like to relax at home and do nothing. Some of us like to run errands and get ready for the upcoming week. All of us wish the weekend would stretch longer, and dread any thoughts of work that creep in before the weekend's up...

Polyester Heart will be starting a semi-regular Sunday afternoon gig at The Press Club. This coming Sunday the 5th, we'll be playing at 6pm, and will do so on the first Sunday of every month. So, if I may suggest, troll around Kensinton in the afternoon, maybe grab a bite, then come down to the Press Club (850 Dundas St. W.) and join us as we try to stretch out the weekend, while getting you home in good enough time to catch the Family Guy and an early night to bed...or you can walk over to the Cameron House and secure a good seat for Kevin Quain and The Mad Bastards, which is always a good way to cap off the weekend (they usually start around 10)....
