Tanned Tin and Spain!

Hey there. This is my first time putting something down here, hope it's cool. I recently arrived back from a weekend in Spain playing at the very cool Tanned Tin festival in Castellon, north of Valencia,  with a little known (here) but fantastic songwriter Barzin. The music took place in a gorgeous theater built in the late 1800's. Of course the seafood, Rioja wine, and architecture were fantastic...but I want to talk about some of the great music I saw.

First off, during Barzin's set we were joined on vibes by Thomas Bartlett, aka Doveman. This man plays with The National, David Byrne, Bebel Gilberto, among many others. He is a fantastic musician, and super nice guy! His set I caught the next night, and being a sucker for great improvised music I loved it. Gorgeous melodies, a quiet and charming voice, and some incredible jazz piano sensibilties. His band also messed around with loops and banjos tucked behind him. Really beautiful. Check out his video done by Vincent Moon.

Out of curiosity I checked out a duo from Sacramento, California called Agent Ribbons. Kind of like a quirky White Stripes (to whom I am sure they hate the camparison,) they surprised me. Loads of fun. Pay attention to the lyrics in Obituary...really interesting. Mount Eerie I had heard mixed things about, but i've got to say, now I know why people like this guy. At first I wasn't sure but by the end of his set I was sold. So confident, and he seemingly comes up with his fantastic lyrics out of thin air. He has got this great package for sale that is a photo album with vinyl, pretty expensive but a great idea. Also of note, The New Year, a great rock band that likes to sneak up on you with their 4 guitars and odd times, think indie rock Godspeed.

My face was blown off by a reunion show by mid 90's rockers Come, and it was a pleasure to meet another Canadian act from Vancouver Ora Cogan. She's been touring around Europe for a while, and her comfort level on stage showed. Great rootsy songwriter, her voice sometimes reminds me of Sandro Perri.

Well, thanks for your time and I hope you check some of these dudes and dudettes out... peace. mb
